I Keep Baking

Since we have been mostly at home because of Covid-19,  I find that baking has become more of my way of passing time.

Yesterday, I decided to start with this,

and on to this,

(Rex finally got curious),

and ended up with this!

Creampuffs were a nice treat on a summer day!

July 17, 2020

July 17, 2020

I start with the date because my impressions of life are relevant to the date.  I am appalled at the “state of the union”.  I do not have the vocabulary (?) to express what I feel.  Life in the third decade of the 21st century is as foreign to me as a different planet.  My upbringing did not, by any stretch of the imagination, prepare me for the world I am currently living in.   A pandemic that has effectively put us on lockdown since March 21, 2020.  So far it has wasted ONE THIRD of 2020.  It is impossible for one to understand how devastating this situation is to the citizens of the USA and the world. How is that possible?  Can one trust anything we hear on the news?  The news these days seems to have an agenda.  Am I wrong?  Should I believe what I hear on CBS, NBC, OR ABC. (Sorry to all the other news outlets, but I am old, and these are the ones I think of).

We live in fear of this virus.  We do not understand it.  We have no clue how to fight it.
That is just one of our current challenges.  George Floyd was murdered before our very eyes on nationwide television.  That sight has forever changed my life. For the first time, I feel that I have a slight understanding of what racial injustice means to people of color.  So now we have “BLM” and riots and violence against certain people and anger against statues and what they represent to some people.  I do not know what is right and what is wrong at this point.  I do not want to see the history of our country erased, good, bad, ugly, or politically incorrect.  What IS, IS.  What happened, happened.  We can only learn from our mistakes.

I do not have answers, I only have pleas to the people of this planet.  I know how grandiose that sounds, but I cannot help it.  I feel that mankind is at a critical point.  We ALL need to tap into our highest and most true self and the core of our individual being that loves life and relates to the existence of a higher power regardless of any individual label of that power.

I would like everyone to take a deep breath, look around, and try to imagine a world that has a place for everyone.  Then I would like you to live it.  One person at a time can change the world.

**Caveat –I would like to say that I could unequivocally accept and tolerate everyone, but that would not be true.  The truly evil, the people that have no empathy or humanity.  The people that are pedophiles, murderers, etc., etc., etc.  It is impossible to list all the perversions known to man, but I feel confident my meaning is clear.
Please make a positive difference.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY

MARY CELEBRATED HER BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK, AND IT WILL BE A BIRTHDAY TO REMEMBER. 2020 THE YEAR MARY TURNED 70 YEARS OLD DURING THE SELF-QUARANTINE FOR THE CORONA VIRUS.

WE GASSED UP THE PRIUS FOR TEN BUCKS AND HEADED UP THE WHITE MOUNTAINS IN A QUEST TO FIND SNOW. THE APACHE INDIAN RESERVATION AND THE APACHE NATIONAL FOREST HAVE CLOSED ALL THEIR RECREATION AREAS INCLUDING THE LAKES TO FISHING.  WE SOON CAME UP TO A ROAD CLOSED BARRICADE ACROSS THE ROAD AND WERE FORCED TO TURN BACK. THE ROAD TO THE SUNRISE SKI MOUNTAIN HOWEVER, WAS OPEN.

AND FULFILLED THE QUEST  OF FINDING SNOW.

TO CELEBRATE THE BIRTHDAY WE HAD PIZZA OFF THE GRILL......

AND MARY BAKED HER OWN JACK DANIELS BIRTHDAY CAKE.

THE CAKE WAS DELICIOUS AND INCLUDED MARY'S FAVORITE JACK DANIELS AND REX'S FAVORITE BUTTERSCOTCH.

WORST TRIP EVER !!!

MIKEY'S ANNUAL VISIT TO NEVADA IS ALL ABOUT HIS BIRTHDAY, MARCH MADNESS, AND ST. PAT'S DAY.

THIS YEAR WAS THE WORST TRIP EVER !!!

NOT ONLY THE "BEER-BUG" SLOWLY SHUTTING DOWN VEGAS, BUT THE WEATHER WENT TO HELL, WITH COLD, RAIN, AND CLOUDS.  FIRST IT WAS EVERY OTHER SLOT MACHINE AND ONLY THREE CUSTOMERS PER TABLE GAME, THEN THEY TOOK AWAY EVERY OTHER BAR STOOL. FINALLY AT 5 PM ON ST. PATS DAY THE GOVERNOR ORDERED ALL THE CASINOS CLOSED AT MIDNIGHT.

MIKEY LUCKED OUT AND CHANGED HIS FLIGHT HOME TO IOWA TO WEDNESDAY MORNING INSTEAD OF FRIDAY AFTERNOON, AND THE FOUR QUEENS KICKED US ALL OUT OF THE HOTEL ON WEDNESDAY MORNING.

HERE IS THE UPDATE ON THE NEW CASINO/HOTEL DOWNTOWN VEGAS.

MARY AND I ARE PACKING UP AT WINTER CAMP AND WAITING FOR A SNOW STORM TO CLEAR FLAGSTAFF AND HEADED TO "THE MOUNTAIN" AND OUR CABIN ON SATURDAY TO HUNKER DOWN.

STAY HOME AND WASH YOUR HANDS !

SPRING

IT'S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR.

MIKEY MAKES HIS ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE TO VEGAS FOR HIS BIRTHDAY AND MARCH MADNESS BASKETBALL.

THE "BEER-BUG" AND WEATHER ARE MAKING THIS THE WORST TRIP IN HIS TEN YEARS OF VISITS.  MAYBE HE WILL GO HOME WITH MONEY SAVED ON BASKETBALL BETS?

WE'VE DONE THE WEEK-END IN LAUGHLIN AND ARE HEADED TO LAS VEGAS TODAY FOR THE WEEK.

WISH US GOOD LUCK AND GO WASH YOUR HANDS, YES AGAIN.

SHEN YUN

FOR YEARS MARY HAS BEEN WATCHING THE COMMERCIALS ON TV EVERY WINTER FOR THE TRAVELLING CHINESE DANCE AND MUSICAL SHOW SHEN YUN.

"SOMEDAY, I WANT TO SEE THAT SHOW". THIS WAS THE YEAR AS WE SCORED MATINEE SHOW TICKETS AT THE SMITH CENTER FOR THE PREFORMING ARTS IN DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS.

RECORDING AND PHOTOGRAPHY STRICTLY FORBIDDEN, SO SORRY, NO PICTURES.  THE SMITH CENTER WAS EQUALLY IMPRESSIVE.

THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN FROM THE BALCONY OF THE SMITH CENTER AND YOU CAN SEE THE DOWNTOWN CASINOS IN THE BACKGROUND.

TWO NIGHTS ON FREMONT STREET, BUT YOU KNOW, "WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS STAYS IN VEGAS".  ACTUALLY IF YOU'VE BEEN PAYING ATTENTION TO THE ADVERTISING, THE CURRENT PHRASE IS. "WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS ONLY HAPPENS IN VEGAS".

THE UPGRADED LIGHT SHOW IS AMAZING. IT IS SO BRIGHT AND VIVID THEY CAN USE IT IN THE DAY TIME.

60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

IF YOU KNOW EVERYONE IN THIS PICTURE, THEN WE ARE RELATED!

SO LAST FRIDAY AFTERNOON MARY AND I WERE OUT WITH MARK AND JAYNE ENJOYING COCKTAILS ON THE PORCH AT THE SILVER DOLLAR IN GOLDEN SHORES IN HONOR OF MARK'S BIRTHDAY.  WHEN I GOT HOME AND FIRED UP FACEBOOK ON MY LAPTOP I SAW A POST FROM KATHY ROTH ANNOUNCING THE 60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY RECEPTION FOR MY UNCLE NED AND AUNT SHARON AT THE JUDA, WISCONSIN COMMUNITY CENTER ON SUNDAY 1PM TO 5PM. I SAID TO MARY, THAT LOOKS LIKE FUN, YOU WANT TO GO?

A QUICK CHECK ON THE INTERNET OF THE WISCONSIN WEATHER AND AVAILABLE FLIGHTS AND WE WERE MAKING RESERVATIONS TO MINNEAPOLIS.  WE CALLED UNCLE HANS, WHO WAS ALSO ENJOYING A FRIDAY AFTERNOON BEER, TO SEE IF HE'D DIG OUT THE CADILLAC AND PICK US UP AND DO THE GROUND WORK.

IN JUST TWO DAYS, AND 800 MILES, WE WERE ABLE TO DO LIMBURGER CHEESE SANDWICHES AT BAUMGARTNER'S ON THE SQUARE IN MONROE, THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY IN JUDA, AND HOY-HOY-HOY FOR SARA IN GREEN BAY.

WE WERE BACK IN VEGAS AT 6PM AND OF COURSE SPENT THE NIGHT ON FREMONT STREET DOWNTOWN. HERE ARE THE LATEST PICTURES OF THE NEW CASINO UNDER CONSTRUCTION.

MY HEARTFELT THANKS TO UNCLE HANS FOR THE TRANSPORTATION AND TO UNCLE NEIL FOR THE HOY-HOY-HOY CELEBRATION AND LODGING.

Renee Remembered

By Uncle Hans

I recently spent some quality time with Neil at Shorty's in Tomahawk.  He scolded me for not creating a memorial blog for Renee. Today is Valentines day and tomorrow is 6 weeks since she passed.

What follows are a few pictures  and her obituary.....

Obituary

Renee Charlene Carlson, 56, of Spooner died on January 4, 2020, in Spooner.
Renee was born on July 23, 1963, to Paul and Karen (Kieran) Carlson in Stillwater, Minnesota.  She grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota.  She worked in the airline industry, ran her own daycare business, and went into healthcare, mastering each field with determination and dedication.  Renee mothered two loving sons, Garrett, 31, of Minneapolis, and Spencer, 27, of Hugo, Minnesota.  She cared for and ministered to both her parents as they died from cancer in their 50’s, taking her mother into her own home for nearly two years.  She has a brother, Matthew, in Phoenix, and a sister, Laura, in the Seattle area.  She moved to the Spooner area in 2008, after vacationing here since 1955, and loved living on the lake in the quiet Northwoods.  She is also survived by her husband, Hans Rechsteiner of Spooner.  She will long be remembered by all who knew her for her quick and beautiful smile and quiet thoughtfulness.

Lake Mohave

Today  we went to Katherine's Landing in the Lake Mead Recreational Area to hike.  I cannot believe we have been here 20 winters and I have never hiked this trail before.  I do know this, I will be hike this trail again as it was really nice.

It to goes along the side of Lake Mohave and leaves me amazed at the desert/lake contrast.

Here's my favorite hiking buddy pulling out ahead of me.  Actually that is unusual.  I am usually in front!!

This was the payoff at the end of the hike, a nice beach.  As I already mentioned, we will be doing this hike again!
