It's My Anniversary!!

Today is the fourth anniversary of being smoke free!!! Quitting smoking is one of my proudest achievements and I am so happy and grateful I was able to do it. Now some food for thought..

1. Four smoke free years comes to 1,461 smoke free days (there was a Leap Year in there).
2. I smoked about 1.5 packs of cigarettes a day so that comes to 43,830 cigarettes I DIDN'T SMOKE. Wow I had to run that through my calculator twice....that is a HUGE number. My lungs must be doing the Teaberry Shuffle!!
3. Let's average $3.50 a pack for cigarettes and see what kind of number we come up with ...Oh My God....it is $7,670.25. Now I know how come I have the money to go on 11 week vacations!!! Wow! Hey, Heather and Nikki.....the shopping spree makes a lot more sense now doesn't it?? I'm glad you didn't see that number before we went!!

Smoking is not an easy habit to break and I was able to do it for one simple reason. I really, really wanted to quit. I had reached the point where my desire to NOT smoke was greater than my desire TO smoke. I didn't do it "cold turkey", I used the patch and carried around polished rocks to play with. Whatever..it worked!!

So many states are passing laws making many public places non-smoking and lots of smokers are angry about their freedom to smoke disappearing. I understand how they feel but I have noticed that smokers are far from free.....they are imprisoned by their addiction to nicotine. They are always noticing...where can I go feed my addiction, where are the ashtrays, where can I go to SMOKE??? Those factors are taken into consideration for EVERY decision they make with regard to where they go or if they will go someplace. Does that sound like freedom to you??

Ok, I admit it....I can be one of those "pain in the ass" former smokers!!

Anyway I want to take this opportunity to apologize to everyone that I made endure stinky, smokey air and clothes during my 40 years as a smoker, especially my children. I am truly sorry...I just didn't realize how disgusting it is.

A Ringing Phone

Cell Phone 4 At 8:30 this morning the phone rang....somebody wanting to know why we are late for our 8:00 appointment. What 8:00 appointment??? Seems we were suppose to have the camper at the RV place today AT 8:00 AM to have our side panel fixed. Well I don't know anything about it and I woke Rex and he didn't know anything about it....so needless to say we rescheduled....we now have an appointment on January 3rd at 8:00 AM to have our side panel fixed. Since we both know about it, I think we will be able to make it!!
RV

I had the normal day off errands today, the library, the grocery store, and an oil change in my car. Nothing very exciting.

This evening I made chicken for supper and watched movies.

I just realized that days off by myself SUCK!!! Thumbs Down

WOW.....What a Christmas for Rex!!

I sure hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and that Santa was good to you all.
3D Santa

We had to work Christmas Day but had different hours. I worked 2 to 10 but Rex had a 5 PM start. When I got home from work, I got my whole after work list done. I also had a Monk DVD that I started watching. It has four episodes on it.
So I am working through my list, seeing the episodes go by and realize oh, Rex should be home any minute. The minutes keep ticking by and I think oh he must have had to do some overtime. Finally, when it hit two hours past the time he should have been home, I put my clothes on, grabbed the cell phone, in case I had to call 911, and set out searching. Thankfully I got all the way to the AVI without seeing "Big Red" in the ditch . In fact "Big Red" was in the employee parking lot....I am very relieved. So now I am not sure if I should just go home or go into the casino to check on him. Maybe he just decided to have a Holiday drink with some co workers, I can't believe he is still working---three hours of OT at the AVI is unheard of. Then I think, if he is having holiday drinks, maybe a safe drive home would be a good idea.
To make a long story short, he was bent over the craps table dealing a "craps game from hell". Craps Poor guy, he never even saw me he was so busy. But my mind was at rest, knowing he was A-OK, so I went home.
That was Rex's Christmas....11 hours of work!!

CHRISTMAS LETTER FROM MT HOPE

REPRINTED HERE, IS THE CHRISTMAS GREETING FROM MARY'S BROTHER AND SISTER -IN-LAW IN MT HOPE, WISCONSIN.

Our grandchildren Jamie and Tyler have gotten a year older (Tyler has his driver’s license). Tyler did great in football (running back) for the jr. varsity (undefeated). Keeps us busy with their games, which we thoroughly enjoy. Bobbie J0 and Brent were blessed with a little girl(Lauren Ann) born on July 31st Our first greatgrandchild. Tim, Ann and Todd are doing fine. Enjoying their children and grandchild. Bill’s mother is currently in a nursing home in Prairie du Chien. Of course, she would like to come home. After a tough spring with my health problems, Bill took me to UW-Madison Hospital where they decided that the transplanted kidney had to be removed. I have been feeling much better since and feel that I’m finally on the road to recovery. It was very hard to let them take the donated kidney that Mary Ann (Bill’s sister) so graciously gave me, but I guess my body just couldn’t tolerate it. I’ve been on dialysis for 15 months now and go three times a week to Platteville. I could have stayed at Prairie du Chien (La Crosse Site), but feel quite comfortable at Platteville, so didn’t want to leave there and go back to PDC. Although, (story is) they are going to open a site in Lancaster in the near future. That would save me 40 miles a trip, if I can get in there. Lancaster would include the same doctors and possibly staff. Something to ponder on: There are three sections six days a week at Platteville, twelve people each section. Thirty six patients six days a week. There is a much larger site in Dubuque, Iowa (15 miles south of Platteville), a smaller site in Prairie du Chien, and a new one opening in Lancaster. Take care of yourself; dialysis isn’t a lot of fun. Bill keeps busy taking me to dialysis, with a few breaks when Todd’s friend (Deanna Osterhaus) can take me. The dialysis patients are always anxious to see new faces. Bill’s cousin, Pam Frederick, took me a couple of times and his sister, Mary Ann as well. It was good for some of the patients to talk with Mary Ann about being a donor. They were quite impressed with her. Not to forget, I’ve driven myself a few times too. I think I did ok, I got home in one piece and I didn’t read anything in the papers about cars being pushed off the road.We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2007.

CHRISTMAS WEEKEND

HERE COMES THE CHRISTMAS WEEKEND, AND WE HOPE YOU ALL HAVE GREAT PLANS TO CELEBRATE. WE HAVE SUNDAY NIGHT "OFF" WHICH IS UNUSUAL FOR US, WE USUALLY WORK SO THAT OTHER EMPLOYEES WITH FAMILIES AROUND CAN ENJOY TIME WITH THEIR KIDS. WE'RE PLANNING ON A CHRISTMAS EVE COCKTAIL PARTY HERE AT THE RV PARK, FOLLOWED BY A COUPLE SMALL LOBSTER TAILS COOKED AT THE CAMPER. OF COURSE THAT COULD ALL CHANGE IF SOMEONE AT WORK DECIDES IT'S A THREE DAY WEEK-END AND WE WILL BE BUSY AT WORK.

YESTERDAY WAS PAYDAY AND WE WERE BOTH OFF, SO IT WAS A RUN TO TOWN ON ERRANDS AND A PAYDAY BEER. OUR PAYDAY BEER WAS AT "LAZY HARRY'S" A BAR IN OLD BULLHEAD OVERLOOKING THE COLORADO RIVER.

IN CHECKING AMY'S BLOG I SEE THAT MY MOTHER SUCCESSFULLY DROVE HERSELF TO SUNNY FLORIDA FOR SEVERAL WEEKS OF VISITING WITH FRIENDS AND GOLF. ON MONDAY, JUDY AND JOE WILL ARRIVE AT AMY'S FOR A FEW DAYS OF SUNSHINE AND GRANDSON SPOILING.

My Turn

Rex left me a note today saying....don't forget to blog, so here I am blogging. Since we have the blog from Angelfire to blogger, Rex has been doing most of the blogging. I guess he decided to take today off.

I had today off but Rex has to work. This is how I spent my day. I left at noon to go to the library and the mall in Laughlin. I had a few things I wanted to pick up at the kitchen store and a couple of things Rex needed. At least things I thought he needed, he never thinks he needs anything. From there I went to Wal-Mart to pick up stuff to make cookies. I copied some cookie recipes off the Weight Watchers web site and wanted to give them a try.

From Wal-Mart I went to a local restraurant called Yo-Yo's Tacos. One of the shift managers was having a surprise birthday party for his wife. My plan was to wish her Happy Birthday, have one drink, and go home to make cookies. You know what they say about plans......didn't quite work out that way. Actually it was kind of fun to socialize with some of the people we work with. You see everyone in a new light when they aren't at work. It was fun.

I finally got home and went to work on my cookies. To make a long story short, I made two kinds of cookies neither of which was fit to eat. I have never made such terrible cookies. Yuck.

So I decided to put a loaf of onion bread in the bread machine, hopefully that will be edible. Right now I am waiting for that to be done and for Rex to get home.

Tomorrow we both have off so don't know what we will be up to other than laundry. Whatever it is will probably show up on tomorrow's blog!!

MOHAVE VALLEY (PART 2)

I THOUGHT I’D INCLUDE AT LEAST ONE INDIAN LEGEND, SO HERE IS THE STORY OF HANKE, THE LITTLE FROG.
MATAVILYA, WHO WAS THE FIRSTBORN OF SKY AND EARTH, ANNOUNCED,
‘WHEN I DIE I WANT TO BE CREMATED.”
AT THIS TIME, THERE WAS NO FIRE IN THE SHADOW OF SPIRIT MOUNTAIN, WHICH IS THE HIGHEST PEAK VISIBLE FROM THE MOHAVE VALLEY. EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NO FIRE WITH WHICH TO LIGHT HIS FUNERAL PYRE, MATAVILYA GATHERED THE MOHAVE PEOPLE TO SHOW THEM HOW TO PREPARE FOR HIS CREMATION.
HE TOLD THEM THAT THEY FIRST MUST DIG A HOLE TO RECEIVE THE ASHES OF HIS REMAINS. HE THEN INSTRUCTED THEM IN HOW TO PLACE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MESQUITE WOOD ON EACH SIDE AND ON TOP OF HIS REMAINS.
MATAYILYA ASKED FOR VOLUNTEERS TO DIG THE HOLE. THE SAND FLEAS SWARMED UP FROM THE MOIST RIVER BEACHES AND SCOOPED OUT A PIT. STILL, THERE WAS NO FIRE TO LIGHT THE MESQUITE LOGS.
THE LITTLE FROG, HANYE, EXPRESSED HIS WILLINGNESS TO SEARCH FOR A SOURCE OF FIRE AND BRING IT BACK TO THE WAITING PEOPLE AND ANIMALS OF THE RIVER. THIS UNLIKELY CANDIDATE LEFT THE SAFETY OF HIS MOIST HABITAT AND SET OFF ACROSS THE ARID LANDSCAPE OF THE MOHAVE DESERT, TRAVELING WEST TOWARD THE PACIFIC OCEAN. HE RETURNED CARRYING A SMOLDERING STICK IN HIS MOUTH.
TODAY, THE MOHAVE PEOPLE STILL CELEBRATE THE LITTLE HERO WHO BROUGHT THEM THE FIRST FIRE.

Ok Ok, at this point I have an "aside" to add. For the last seven winters we have been dealing at the AVI, and they have had chips (or cheques, in dealer lingo) with a picture of a frog with what appeared as a cigar in his mouth. I cannot even begin to guess the number of players that have commented or asked about the frog...now that I know the answer.....we no longer have those chips!!! Such is life I guess.

CHRISTMAS LETTER FROM SPOONER

THERE ARE SEVERAL READERS THAT KNOW MY BROTHER HANS AND HIS WIFE WENDY, SO TO BRING YOU UP TO SPEED ON THINGS IN SPOONER, I'M REPRINTING THEIR CHRISTMAS LETTER HERE.

Hello all,

It’s that time of year when some of us sit down a the keyboard and concoct the annual Christmas letter; that happy, cheery, impersonal, bit of prose that sounds more like a government press release than something you would send your friends or relatives. 2006 was exciting for us. Late in 2005 we got involved in a new venture, the world of the Caribbean Medical School . We invested some money in a school owned by old friends in Belize . This has been an emotional rollercoaster ride, but always exciting. We got into a nasty hostile takeover fight with a school in London that had lost it’s charter and was folding. We offered to share our charter with them to allow their students a chance to pursue their educations and not have to totally start over. It got so nasty that our lender for student loans suspended us, and we had essentially no cash flow for about 6 months. We did survive and we now have that new location in London . Over this last weekend we restructured the company and actually look pretty good, going forward. We are beginning to cash flow and we have swapped out our old friends as partners as they had to divest because of a non-compete clause from an old lawsuit from a previous school they owned. (complicated? Nah!) Our new partner is a Harvard trained psychiatrist who is on faculty at Harvard and has a dozen or so friends there who want to teach at our school. In a nutshell, the future looks brighter (right now), we will see how the Christmas letter looks for 2007!

Callie (alphabetically, now, let’s be politically correct) is at the Art Institute in Minneapolis since early July. She is in a 36 month degree program in animation. She called this week, all bummed out because she earned something less than an “A” in a course, a “B+”, which was a first. She works as an usher at the Guthrie, which is several blocks from her student housing. We always feel that kids grow up too quickly, but the rate of change is never quite so steep as those first few months away from home!

Hannah and Jason built a house this summer (Hannah 5%, Hans 1%, Jake 5%, Jason’s Mom and Dad 5%, Jason’s other friends 5%, Jason 97.3%). It was an exciting project and fun to be even a small part of. It is across the road from us, and now that it is largely completed, they have been trying to re-capture their old lives of hunting, trapping, kayaking, fishing, horse, and partying with friends, striving to pretend that no one noticed that they have been missing for 9 months. They did manage to hold on to their jobs, Jason as a crew manager at Northwest Builder, a regional commercial builder and Hannah in the graphic design department of Rice Lake Weighing Systems, an international weighing scale manufacturer.

Ian is a senior and looking forward to life after High School. He is looking at different careers and colleges. He survived football, and lettered. Spooner Schools have a clever event at Christmas where the select choir anchors a “Dinner Concert”. The “food classes” (“Home Ec” is a term much like photo film……….so “six months ago”!) do the food for an elegant, white linen, sit-down dinner for 300 parents and the choir and several other musical acts, some student and some amateur from the community, entertain. They charge plenty, which works out well because the school district is so broke that they don’t particularly fund unnecessary activities like music any longer. Ian is in the Select Choir and he was in the Food Class so he got to sing and help prepare the food, both of which were worth the price of admission.

Jake started his own business after taking the long-discussed-and-put-off decision to quit his cushy job in the Twin Cities and become an independent electrical contractor. Put another way, he consciously decided to forgo a regular paycheck and live in abject poverty. However, it seems to be working in the face of a slump in construction and the jobs are starting to find him on a more regular basis. Not all of his decisions are that crazy. He is still single, for example, not wanting to make the mistake that nearly all of the rest of have made.

Janelle and Todd are enjoying life in St Paul . They are remodeling their house in anticipation of a new baby in February. This, like Hannah and Jason’s, has been a labor of love and Todd has done most of the heavy lifting. Carrying a new baby has been Janelle’s task and she has been a trooper in the face of some nasty and prolonged nausea. Todd remains in the management side of the retail liquor business and Janelle does research for the Minnesota State legislature. Todd frightened us all last Christmas by sending us all pictures of his hobby, whaling in the unpredictable waters of the Twin Cities.

Laura and Jim have settled into life in Dresser Wisconsin. No one knows where that is (particularly, no cell phone company knows where Dresser is). Ironically, if you explain that it is near Trollhaugen Ski Resort, people’s eyes light up and they say, “Oh, Yeah!”. Laura probably gets the prize for the most exciting moment of 2006 by delivering Owen, who is Wendy’s first grandbaby. He may well go on to be president, pitch the last game in the World Series, then win the Nobel Prize, but the news anchor will still introduce each of those stories by mentioning that he is Wendy’s first grandchild. In spite of a mild early winter, the resort has been booming as the weather has supported snow-making and it looks like a white Christmas at Trollhaugen!

So, there you have it. Here in Lake Woebecable , the men are strong, the women beautiful and THE KIDS ARE ALL ABOVE AVERAGE. We hope you all have a great holiday season and that your travel is safe and effective, especially if you are coming to Spooner with presents for us.

MOHAVE VALLEY (PART 1)

TIME FOR ONE OF MY BORING HISTORY LESSONS, AND INSTEAD OF DOING THE “CUT AND PASTE” THING, WHICH YOU ALL HATE, I’VE DECIDED TO ENLIST MY PLAGIARISM SKILLS AND TYPE IT OUT FOR YOU. THE MOHAVE VALLEY IS ABOUT 100 MILES SOUTH OF LAS VEGAS ALONG THE COLORADO RIVER. YES, IT’S THE SAME COLORADO RIVER THAT RUNS THROUGH THE GRAND CANYON . THE COLORADO RIVER SERVES AS THE STATE LINE BETWEEN NEVADA AND ARIZONA, AND CALIFORNIA AND ARIZONA. THE RIVER RUNS NORTH TO SOUTH, AND ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE VALLEY ARE THE NEWBERRY MOUNTAINS OF CALIFORNIA AND NEVADA , AND ON THE EAST SIDE, THE BLACK MOUNTAINS OF ARIZONA.
TO START AT THE BEGINNING, WE BEGIN WITH THE PIPA AHA MACAV INDIAN TRIBE, TRANSLATED - “THE PEOPLE BY THE RIVER”. THE FIRST SPANISH EXPLORES TO ENTER THE VALLEY HEARD THE PRONUNCIATION AS “MO-HAV-EEE” AND HENCE THE INDIANS BECAME KNOWN AS THE MOJAVE INDIANS. LATER THE ENGLISH SPELLED THE NAME “MOHAVE”. TODAY BOTH SPELLINGS ARE ACCEPTABLE. THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF THE INDIANS GOES BACK AT LEAST A THOUSAND YEARS, AS EVIDENCE, THEIR PETROGLYPH'S IN GRAPEVINE CANYON, WHICH HAVE BEEN DATED AT LEAST THIS OLD. GRAPEVINE CANYON IS THE OLD INDIAN TRAIL TO SPIRIT MOUNTAIN, “AVI KWA AME”. THIS MOUNTAIN, THE TALLEST PEAK IN THE NEWBERRY MOUNTAINS, IS THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE FOR THE INDIANS. FROM THIS MOUNTAIN THE TRIBE’S SPIRIT MENTOR, MUTAVILYA, CREATED THE COLORADO RIVER, IT’S PLANTS AND ANIMALS AND INSTRUCTED THE PIPA AHA MACAV IN THE ARTS OF CIVILIZATION, AND CHARGED THEM WITH PROTECTING THE VALLEY. THEY WERE PROSPEROUS FARMERS WITH WELL ESTABLISHED VILLAGES AND TRADE NETWORKS THAT STRETCHED AS FAR AS THE PACIFIC OCEAN.

DONE WHAT?
DONE WAXING THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAMPER, BUT AS I CROSS IT OFF THE "WINTER TO DO LIST", IT GETS ADDED RIGHT BACK ON TO THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST TO GET A SECOND COAT OF WAX IN APRIL. SO WHAT'S THE NEXT PRIORITY ITEM ON THE LIST?
GIVE ME (YOU) A BREAK BEFORE I START BORING YOU WITH "PISS'IN & MOAN'IN" ABOUT THE NEXT PROJECT. SUMMER IS BETTER WHEN I DON'T HAVE A LIST.

MONEY: YESTERDAY IN THE BLOG I WAS REPORTING AN EXTRA PAYCHECK FROM HARVEYS, WELL ALSO IN THE MAIL WAS A REFUND CHECK FROM MY VEHICLE INSURANCE COMPANY THAT I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT FROM LAST OCTOBER WHEN I CHANGED THE INSURANCE ON THE TRUCK AND TRAILER. TODAY JUDY CALLED AND SAID THAT THE DIVIDEND CHECKS FROM THE ACE TELEPHONE COMPANY WERE IN THE MAIL. ALL THIS GOOD NEWS IS SURE MAKING MY CREDIT CARD COMPANY BREATH EASIER..................

BUSINESS IS SLOW AT THE CASINO. THIS IS NORMAL RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, BUT AFTER THE HOLIDAYS, LOOK OUT. THE SNOWBIRDS WILL BE HERE IN FULL FORCE SHARING OUR WINTER WEATHER. WE'RE ONLY WORKING FOUR DAYS THIS WEEK AND NEXT, SO WE WILL BE READY.

TODAY WE GOT THE HONDA WAXED UP. I'M GONNA GET THIS "WINTER TO DO LIST" KNOCKED OFF YET.

A DAY OFF

WRITTEN BY REX
Custom Smiley

YESTERDAY IN THE SEMI-MONTHLY MAILING FROM SOUTH DAKOTA, WE EACH RECEIVED A PAYROLL CHECK FROM HARVEYS CASINO IN LAKE TAHOE FOR $134? WHAT? LET'S HIT THE BANK AND CASH THESE QUICK BEFORE THEY CHANGE THEIR MINDS !!!

I KNOW THAT A COUPLE OF OUR READERS ARE CONSIDERING WRITING A BLOG IN JANUARY AT THE START OF THE NEW YEAR. AFTER USING BLOGGER FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS I CAN RECOMMEND THIS SITE. IT'S EASY TO LEARN AND USE. THEY HAVE RECENTLY CHANGED TO A BETA FORMAT AND HAVE MANY IMPROVEMENTS. I ESPECIALLY LIKE PLAYING WITH THE GREEN RIGHT HAND COLUMN. BE SURE TO LET US KNOW IF YOU START BLOGGING AS WE WILL BE REGULAR READERS.

YESTERDAY WAS A LAUNDRY DAY, NOW I KNOW MOST OF YOU THINK OF A LAUNDROMAT AS A "TRAILER TRASH" ACTIVITY, BUT IN AN RV PARK IT'S A SOCIAL PLACE WHERE YOU RUN INTO THE NEIGHBORS AND GET CAUGHT UP ON THE GOSSIP. YESTERDAY WE WERE VISITING WITH A CANADIAN FROM THE NEXT ROW OVER WHO HAD ARRIVED THE DAY BEFORE AND WAS ENJOYING BASKING IN THE SUNSHINE ON THE PORCH OF THE LAUNDROMAT. HE SAID IT WAS -20 DEGREES WHEN HE LEFT CANADA LAST WEEK AND HE SURE WAS GLAD TO BE HERE. THERE IS ALSO A BULLETIN BOARD ANNOUNCING ALL KIND OF ACTIVITIES GOING ON IN THE PARK. BESIDES IN JUST TWO HOURS WE FINISHED 5 LOADS OF LAUNDRY, WASHED, DRIED, FOLDED, AND PUT AWAY.

I BETTER GET OUTSIDE AND DO SOME WAXING.....

Messed Up!!

BBQ

We both had today off.....so lets see..how did this go.

1. Laundry

2. Rex has been pissing and moaning about waxing the camper and the fact that he has been unable to get to it because of the wind. So today there was not much wind so he arranged for adult supervision (that means I sat in a lawn chair and watched) while he climbed the ladder to the roof. The theory being if he falls I will be on hand to call 911 right away and he won't have to lay there long. From the roof, he reached over the side to wax the top section of the front of the trailer. This project took exactly 5 minutes...OK, done with that and on to Circle H for day off cocktails!! Of course, Rex still has the rest of the trailer to wax, but I am sure we will have more windless days!!

3. After happy hour at Circle H, we went back to the camper. Rex decided to work on the blog and I did prep work for our day off supper of pizza. Now I bet you are wondering why, if Rex was working the the blog, I am writing it??? Now that question has a pretty interesting answer. It is because he typed it and forgot to save it, the typed it again and again didn't save it. By that time frustration set in and here I am blogging. Desktop

I really shouldn't make fun of Rex's frustration level....he can be so patient and persistent sometimes. Take the little smiles we can now put on the blog. He worked for two days to figure out how to so that...and I get the benefit of his computer savvy!!

3D Santa These are so cute and there are tons of them... I am sure you be seeing a lot of them!!
Tomorrow it is back to work for me and another day off for Rex... Roulette

I'm Off!!

Today is Wednesday and I do not have to work...that makes today a very good day. What could make it better is for me to win the power ball lottery. The down side of that is the realization that my chances are astronomical!!

Today I got up and hopped in my car and went to Laughlin to the library. then I went to get a haircut. After that I had to get my day off Wal-Mart fix. There I finished my Xmas shopping.

On the way to Laughlin, I had to pass the fields on the reservations...the local Indians are historically really good farmers and grow several crops, among them, hay and cotton. After they harvest, they let a herd of sheep loose in the field to clean it up. They are in the picture above. I thought the picture would show up here..but it is at the beginning of this blog. Still learning how to navigate in blogger!!!

Tonight I finally cooked my lime marinated pork chops for our neighbors. They liked it!! Unfortunately I had to cook them inside as the wind returned today and no chance of firing up the Big gASS grill. It was still nice to have Steve and Meryl over. They are really nice people and good friends!!

MI III

IF SUPERMAN GETS AN AVERAGE RATING THEN MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III RECEIVES A GREAT RATING. IT'S "ACTION JACKSON" AND DOUBLE CROSSES FOR TOM CRUISE AND PARTNERS. OF COURSE THESE TWO MOVIES LOOKED GREAT ON THE NEW WIDE SCREEN TV, BUT THERE HAS BEEN NO PROGRESS ON TRAILER WAXING, THE PRIORITY PROJECT ON THE WINTER'S "TO DO" LIST. I NEED A SWIFT KICK IN THE ASS TO GET MY WORK DONE. THINK MARY WILL OBLIGE ME?

BLOGGING PROBLEMS

WE HAVE BEEN HAVING SOME BLOGGING DIFFICULTIES ON OUR ANGELFIRE HOST. IT’S NOTHING THAT AFFECTS YOU THE READERS, BUT AS THE AUTHORS IT HAS BEEN TORMENTING. WE HAVE NOT HAD ACCESSES TO OUR “CONTROL PANEL” WHICH IS MOST COMMONLY USED TO POST AND EDIT OUR BLOG AND ENTRIES. I DID FIND A WAY TO BACKDOOR THE SYSTEM AND AT LEAST POST OUR ENTRIES, BUT IT’S A ONE SHOT DEAL FOR EACH ENTRY. THERE IS NO WAY WE CAN GO BACK AND FIX A TYPO OR REWORD A SENTENCE. THE CONTROL PANEL ALSO HAS LOT’S OTHER COOL FUNCTIONS, LIKE ALLOWING YOU TO WRITE AND SAVE DRAFTS, OR TO CHANGE THE TEMPLATE AND APPEARANCE OF OUR BLOG. WE HAD BEEN LIVING WITH IT AND WORKING WITH IT FOR A WEEK, WHEN WE FINALLY E-MAILED ANGLEFIRE FOR HELP. THEIR AUTOMATED REPLY PROMISED AN ANSWER IN 48 HRS TO 72 HRS. ANOTHER WEEK HAS PASTED AND NO RESPONSE OR SOLUTION. OUR SOLUTION IS MOVE THE BLOG. THE BLOG IS STILL ACCESSIBLE AT ANGELFIRE IF THERE IS SOMETHING YOU NEED TO GO BACK TO AND REREAD OR GET CAUGHT UP ON, AND WE ARE BOTH ANGELFIRE FANS AND HAVE USED THEM FOR OUR WEBSITE FOR YEARS. THE MAIN “HAPPY CAMPERS” WEBSITE IS IN NO WAY AFFECTED AND REMAINS WHERE IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN. WE HAVE DECIDED TO TRY THE GOOGLE PRODUCT CALLED BLOGGER. IN TESTING THE NEW BLOG WE CONSULTED OUR TWO MOST AVID READERS FOR THEIR OPINIONS. AMY REPORTS THAT THE NEW BLOG LOOKS GREAT, AND THIS IS WHERE HER BLOG “SAUCER SCHNANIGANS” IS HOSTED. NIKKI, ON THE OTHER HAND PREFERS THE ANGELFIRE SITE. SHE OBJECTS TO SMALLER PICTURES, NO MOOD SELECTION, THE BETTER LOOKING TEMPLATE, AND THE THINNER AREA THAT IS ACTUALLY USED FOR TEXT. SO CHECK OUT OUR NEW BLOG SITE AND LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.

http://www.rexandmary.blogspot.com/

ONCE YOU FIND IT BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A FAVORITE OR ADD THE NEW SITE TO YOUR BOOKMARK LIST. IF YOU ARE HAVING ANY PROBLEMS FINDING THE NEW BLOG, SEND US AN E-MAIL AND MAYBE WE CAN HELP.

SUPERMAN

DVD’S ON THE NEW WIDE SCREEN TV HAVE A PERFECT PICTURE. UNFORTUNATELY I CAN’T GIVE “SUPERMAN” A PERFECT RATING. OH WELL, I GUESS SUPERMAN IS A LOT LIKE JAMES BOND, NO MATTER WHAT, YOU HAVE TO CHECK IT OUT.

AND THE CAESAR CHICKEN BURGERS………… CRAP !!! WE SHARED ONE WITH THE NEIGHBORS AND THEY BOTH THOUGHT THEY WERE GREAT, BUT MARY AND I AGREED THEY WERE DRY AND HAD A FUNNY TASTE TO THEM. FILE THAT RECIPE IN THE “ROUND FILE“. SPEAKING OF THE “ROUND FILE”, RADICCHIO, A SMALL RED CABBAGE LOOKING THING, SUCKS TOO. IT’S BITTER AND EXPENSIVE.

TODAY WE RETURN TO WORK AFTER TWO DAYS “OFF” TOGETHER. NEXT WEEK’S SCHEDULE HAS US WORKING FIVE DAYS, BUT ONLY ONE DAY “OFF” TOGETHER, THURSDAY.

THAT’S ALL FROM THE MOHAVE DESSERT TODAY ……………

CAN YOU SAY FLAT SCREEN?

HDTV…………. I STILL HAVEN’T FIGURED IT OUT? DO YOU NEED A SPECIAL ANTENNA? DO YOU NEED A SPECIAL BOX ATTACHED TO THE ANTENNA? I JUST HOOKED UP MY NEW SONY LCD HDTV FLAT SCREEN LIKE ANY OTHER TV AND I GOT A PICTURE. IN THIS AREA I DO RECEIVE TWO DIGITAL TV STATIONS AND THE PICTURE IS UNBELIEVABLE, PERFECT LIKE WATCHING A DVD, HOWEVER BOTH STATIONS ARE SPANISH SPEAKING SO …….., BUT THE LATINO BABES ON THE SPANISH SOAPS ARE WORTH WATCHING. ANYWAY IN TWO YEARS (2009) IT WILL BE THE REST OF YOU WITH OLD TV’S THAT WILL BE WONDERING, DO I NEED A SPECIAL ANTENNA? DO I NEED A SPECIAL BOX ATTACHED TO THE ANTENNA? BECAUSE THE FCC IS REQUIRING ALL TV STATIONS TO BROADCAST IN HD. MEANWHILE I’M VERY HAPPY WITH MY NEW SONY TV, AND I HOPE IT LASTS AS WELL AS MY LAST SONY WHICH IS STILL GOING IN THE BEDROOM AFTER MANY YEARS (ABOUT 20) OF USE IN THE OLE SUPPER CLUB AND BOUNCING ALONG THE ROAD IN OUR MANY TRAVELS.

AS ALWAYS IT WAS GOOD TO CATCH UP WITH PAULIE AT LUNCH YESTERDAY, AND LISTEN TO HIS STORIES OF OBEDIENCE CLASS WITH BAILEY, HIS OLE DODGE TRUCK PROBLEMS, BOWLING WITH HIS FRIENDS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT WITH $1 BEERS, AND THE ONGOING CHANGES IN LAS VEGAS.

IT SURE SEEMED STRANGE YESTERDAY WHILE SHOPPING TO LISTEN TO THE CHRISTMAS MUSIC PLAYING IN THE STORES ON ONE HAND, AND WISHING I HAD WORN SHORTS INSTEAD OF JEANS ON THE OTHER.

TONIGHT IT’S FIRE UP THE BIGG GASS GRILL FOR CHICKEN CAESAR BURGERS, A RACHEL RAY RECIPE, INCLUDING GROUND CHICKEN, GARLIC, PARMIGIANA REGGIANO CHEESE, WORCESTERSHIRE, PARSLEY, MUSTARD, AND (OF COURSE) ANCHOVIES. SOUNDS GOOD DOESN’T IT? AND FOR ENTERTAINMENT? THE NEW SUPERMAN MOVIE ON DVD.

GUESS I BETTER GET WORKING ON MY TRAILER WAXING PROJECT………………..“SUNNY & 80”……………….

Vegas Bound ......

Today is the first day off that Rex and I have had together since November 19th!! We celebrated by going to Vegas and having lunch with Paul.
That was one reason we went to Vegas, the other was Rex wanted to go to Best Buy and Circuit City. Ever since he dropped the TV he has been thinking about getting a new one. Today he put thought into action and bought a Sony 23 inch flat screen TV. As I am sitting here writing this, he is watching his new toy and let me tell you the picture is absolutely great!! Especially when you consider all we have for TV reception is a roof antenna. That is just amazing.
We also went to Trader Joe’s, Wild Oats, and Bed, Bath, and Beyond. As much as I dislike Vegas, there is every kind of store in the world there and I DO like to shop!!

No More Wind !!!

I woke up this morning to two things..silence and stillness. When the wind blows, the camper rocks just like the cradle in the nursery rhyme. Also the wind is loud. When I actually got out of bed it was real apparent that today was different from the last SIX days of wind..people were out and about!! Thank goodness!!

I made some sweet potato bread in the bread machine today, boy does it smell good!! It tastes good too but the smell is really wonderful. Rex had to sample it right away, this is one of his favorite breads. Mine too for that matter.

Tonight at work the band was so good.....the music was reminiscent of the Big Band Era, relaxing and mellow. Not often we get that type of music at work and I for one really enjoyed it.

The burros were back today, they must have decided to enjoy a day without wind with a nice long hike to the RV park. They sure are something...enjoyable to see at any rate, but they sure can be pesky.
For me today of day 5 of 6 which means tomorrow is my 6th day of work in a row but then I have two days off...Thank God!!

The Big Wind of '06

By Mary
Custom Smiley Remember my ranting and raving about the wind last Wednesday?? That was six days ago and the wind is STILL blowing…let me tell you people are getting mighty cranky!!

I think we have mentioned before all the development going on around here. This area has grown so much in the seven years we have been coming that it is just amazing. Anyway because this area is so popular, golf courses are being built left and right. There is a new one at the corner of HWY 95 and Boundary Cone Road which is the road we live on. There is another one under construction about three miles up Boundary Cone and on the other side. The first step in this construction is to totally clear the land of all vegetation. What do you think is happening in this very strong wind and cleared land? See picture.

I bet the developers of this project are REALLY cranky!! These sand drifts remind me of snow drifts…but it is sand…wonder if this is what the Sahara Desert longs like only on a larger scale??

Otherwise we are just plugging away at work…Rex had another big work week. He got 45.5 hours, I got 38. Winter at the AVI can be labor intensive, but as Rex has often mentioned….need all the hours we can get to take a long vacation in ‘08.

The AVI has grown along with the area in general these last seven years. One of their newest additions is a separate building housing and events center. This is called Mohave Crossing and has enough interior room for roping and penning cowboy events. This means we get to see a lot of cowboys (and cowgirls) here, complete with six inch belt buckles and spurs on their boots. Can’t forget the Indians…..we have our share them too.

The West is a very interesting place!!

WILD BURROS

THE WILD BURROS IN THE BLACK MOUNTAINS TO OUR EAST ARE LEFT OVER FROM THE GOLD MINNING DAYS OF THE 1800’S, THEY WERE USED BY THE MINNERS TO PULL HEAVY CARTS OF ORE OUT OF THE MINES. WHEN THE GOLD MINNING PLAYED OUT THE CREATURES WERE TURNED LOSE TO ROAM WILD IN THE MOUNTAINS.

IN IT’S HAYDAY THE BLACK MOUNTAINS IN OATMAN ARIZONA AREA PRODUCED ABOUT $36 MILLION IN GOLD. TODAY THE BURROS ARE PROTECTED BY THE GOVERNMENT JUST LIKE THE WILD MUSTANGS OF NEVADA. A COUPLE OF THE CRITTERS WANDERED DOWN OUT OF THE MOUNTAINS AND DOWN TO RV PARK THIS AFTERNOON.

ON A SIDE BAR: I’M ENJOYING THE LAST OF THE WISCONSIN DEPPLER’S BABY SWISS FROM CHEESEDAYS. WE’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT A TRIP INTO VEGAS ON THURSDAY WITH A STOP AT THE TRADER JOE’S MARKET, MAYBE I CAN FIND SOME “IMPORTED” SWISS CHEESE FROM WISCONSIN THERE…………….

AROUND HERE IT’S ALL “HAPPY COWS” FROM CALIFORNIA.

JUST WORK'IN

WRITTEN BY REX
Custom Smiley I'VE REALLY SLIPPED INTO THE "COUCH-POTATO" MODE HERE IN THE MOHAVE VALLEY. ONLY FOR ME IT ISN'T HOURS ON THE COUCH WATCHING TV, IT'S ENDLESS HOURS SITTING IN FRONT OF THE COMPUTER. I REALLY ENJOY THE NEWSPAPERS, POSTVILLE, WAUKON, DECORAH, LA CROSSE, MOHAVE VALLEY, AND LAKE TAHOE. I ALSO SPEND A LOT OF TIME READING OTHER RV'ERS BLOGS, SEVERAL OF THEM I READ DAILY.

MEANWHILE MY WINTER'S LIST OF THINGS TO DO IS GROWING LONG. THE CURRENT PRIORITY IS HAND WAXING THE OUTSIDE OF THE TRAILER, AND I CAN REPORT THAT I HAVE THE BACK DONE AND THE OTHER THREE SIDES TO GO.

I'M STILL NOT SURE ON HOW WE ENDED UP ON NEVADA'S NEW MINIMUM WAGE LAW, BUT THERE WERE LOT'S SMILES AND PAPERS FLYING AROUND THE PIT LAST NIGHT SO IT LOOKS HOPEFUL. THAT $1 AN HOUR WOULD MEAN AN EXTRA $1,000.00 EACH FOR MARY AND I. I ALSO STATED THAT WE EXPECT TO EARN 25 WEEKS PAY IN 23 WEEKS, AND THAT'S WELL ON THE WAY TOO. WE WORKED THE WEEK-END (FRI. & SAT.) BEFORE THE START OF WEEK #23, AND MY FIRST TWO FULL WEEKS BACK TO WORK HAVE BEEN SIX DAY WEEKS, SO ONLY TWO WEEKS IN AND I ALREADY HAVE FOUR OF THE EXTRA TEN DAYS I HOPE TO WORK THIS WINTER. SO WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?............

WELL IT GOES LIKE THIS, THE MORE MONEY WE MAKE THE MORE TIME OFF WE CAN TAKE. IN 2006 WE TOOK 16 WEEKS OFF, AFTER WORKING EXTRA IN 2005 AND PUTTING TOGETHER A TRAVEL FUND. IN 2007 WE PLAN TO WORK MORE AND ONLY TAKE SIX WEEKS OFF PUTTING TOGETHER A TRAVEL FUND FOR 2008. WE LOVE THOSE EVEN NUMBERED YEARS !!!

I'M STILL THINKING "BEACH BUM". TONIGHT SHOULD BE INTERESTING AT THE CASINO, WE HAVE A LIVE FIGHT CARD, AND COWBOYS COMPETING FOR PENNING CHAMPIONSHIPS. ACROSS THE RIVER FROM THE CASINO THE INDIANS BUILT A HUGH EVENT CENTER, CALLED MOHAVE CROSSING, IT'S BIG ENOUGH TO HOLD A RODEO INSIDE !! IT'S A VERY IMPRESSIVE BUILDING AND THE COWBOYS LOVE COMPETING INSIDE OUT OF THE WIND AND DUST. I'LL TELL YOU WHAT, THOSE COWBOYS LOVE TO DRINK AND GAMBLE WITH BOTH HANDS COME NIGHT TIME.

THE FIGHT CROWD TENDS TO BE MOSTLY (LARGE) HISPANIC MEN FROM LOS ANGELES. THE MIX OF THESE TWO GROUPS TONIGHT IN THE CASINO WILL BE VERY INTERESTING.

What to do ................

By Mary
Custom Smiley OK here are the facts. Yesterday was my 7th day in a row of work. Now I have Wednesday and Thursday off. I had a GREAT day planned. Now on to the facts….

One of the reasons I really like going to the gym is because I can watch my two favorite TV stations-Food Network and HGTV- while on the treadmill. The other day I watched Michael Chiarello make “Perfectly Grilled Radicchio”. Now that looked really interesting!! So instead of feeling bad that Rex and I have different days off, I decided I could cook things that appealed to me and not have to give a thought about the fact that Rex wouldn’t touch radicchio with a ten foot pole. I could have a dinner party with the next door neighbors (they will eat anything!!). COOL---I am now pumped about my days off!!

So what to make to serve with radicchio?? After looking at several internet recipe sites and several cookbooks, I opted for garlic, ginger, and lime pork loin. Yesterday I put the pork loin in the fridge to marinate. Can’t wait….this is going to be fun!!

So I get up this morning to 25 MILE AN HOUR WINDS!!! High winds just shut down my dinner party…the Big gASS grill does not stay lit in this shit. To say that I am disappointed does not even begin to cover how I feel….and sad to say tomorrow is suppose to be windy too. Rex has Friday and Saturday off…..wonder what the wind will be like those days?????

Now on a much happier note, we got a surprise visit today from Paul and Bailey. Bailey loved waking up Rex, she jumped in bed with him and he got right up.

For anyone that has been wondering about my Mother, she is doing great. She is currently in a nursing home, but we are looking into an assisted living facility which would fit her needs much better. Her short term memory is not good but she has most everything else straight and truth be told, her short term memory has not been good for quite a while. Thank you for all your good wished and prayers….I am very grateful and best of all, it worked!

WEEK # 22

WRITTEN BY REX
Custom Smiley SEE THE WEEK COUNT IS GOING DOWN ALREADY. JUST 22 SHORT WEEKS AND WE WILL BE ON THE MOVE AGAIN TOWARD LAKE TAHOE. ACTUALLY 2007 IS AN ODD NUMBERED YEAR, AND THAT MEANS MORE WEEKS OF WORK, AS OF NOW THE ONLY TRIP I HAVE PLANNED IS TO FLY TO GREEN BAY FOR LAURA'S WEDDING IN OCTOBER. THERE IS ALWAYS 2008 TO LOOK FORWARD TO, AND I'M ALREADY THINKING "BEACH BUM".

OUR WEATHER IS HANGING IN THERE WITH DAILY HIGHS IN THE UPPER 70'S AND NIGHT TIME LOWS IN THE 50'S. AT CHRISTMAS TIME WE WILL HAVE WINTER IN THE LOWER DESERT AND WE WILL BE IN JEANS AND SWEATSHIRTS UNTIL VALENTINES DAY WHEN SUMMER WEATHER WILL RETURN.

TUNE IN TOMORROW.............
