SCOOTER PROGRESS

ON MARY’S DAYS OFF THIS WEEK WE GOT OUT FOR A SECOND SCOOTER RIDE TOGETHER. COLE MADE A SUGGESTION FOR MOUNTING AND DISMOUNTING WHICH WORKED OUT GREAT FOR US. SCRATCH THAT OFF THE LIST.

MARY SAT VERY STILL ON OUR 40 MILE RIDE AND BALANCING WAS MUCH IMPROVED, EXCEPT FOR THE 15-20 MILE AN HOUR WIND. RIDING IN THE WIND WAS GOOD EXPERIENCE FOR US, BECAUSE THE WIND BLOWS A LOT ALONG THIS COLORADO RIVER VALLEY. I DON’T TAKE THE SCOOTER OUT IF THE WIND IS BLOWING 25 MILES AN HOUR OR MORE, AND THE TEMPERATURE HAS TO BE 60 DEGREES OR ABOVE. THE TEMPERATURE THIS AFTERNOON WAS 65. NOT BAD TO BE OUT PRACTICING ON THE SCOOTER THE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

WE JUST NEED MORE PRACTICE BEFORE WE ATTEMPT A SCOOTER TOUR. OUR FIRST TOUR IS TENTATIVELY SCHEDULLED FOR THE THE THIRD WEEK OF FEBRUARY TO LAKE HAVASU TO MEET UP WITH OUR SHOW LOW BUDDIES FOR A GAME OF JENGA AND MAYBE A DRINK OR TWENTY. THIS WILL MAKE A GOOD SHAKE DOWN AT 50 MILES EACH WAY. THE ROUTE WILL INCLUDE 9 MILES OF INTERSTATE 40 AS WELL.

WE RECEIVED A SET OF WATER PROOF SADDLE BAGS FROM TWISTED THROTTLE. THEY AREN’T REAL BIG BECAUSE THE MUFFLER IS ANGLED UP ON THE 2013 MODEL.

DSC05237

PACKING FOR OUR SHAKE DOWN OVERNIGHTER TO LAKE HAVASU WILL DETERMINE IF WE NEED TO CONSIDER A TANK OR TUNNEL BAG AS WELL. THERE IS A LOT OF ROOM UNDER THE SEAT, BUT WE HAVE RATHER BULKY JACKETS.

IN OTHER SCOOTER UPDATES, I’M STILL STRUGGLING TO REGISTER THE NEW SCOOTER IN SOUTH DAKOTA. THE SALES TAX IN ARIZONA IS 7.5% COMPARED TO 4% IN SOUTH DAKOTA, PLUS CHEAPER TITLE, LIC., AND INSURANCE. IT MAKES THE HOOPS WORTH JUMPING THRU IN THE END.

AFTER THE PAPERWORK, NEXT WILL BE A TRAILER TO HAUL THE SCOOTER. WE’RE CONSIDERING A CARGO TRAILER SO THE SCOOTER WILL ALWAYS HAVE A GARAGE TO PARK IN. THE OLD SCOOTER WAS SMALL ENOUGH TO PUSH INSIDE THE PORCH FOR COVERED PARKING AND SECURITY, BUT THE NEW SCOOTER IS TOO BIG FOR THAT TRICK. OF COURSE NOTHING IS SIMPLE, THE SCOOTER WOULD FIT INSIDE A 5X8 TRAILER, BUT IF WE WERE TO MAKE IT INTO A TRIKE, A 6X10 TRAILER BECOMES NECESSARY. DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DECISIONS …..

WE HAVE THE REST OF DECEMBER AND JANUARY TO KEEP ON PRACTICING, COMPLETING PAPERWORK, AND DECIDE ON A TRAILER. THE SCOOTER HAS 350 MILES ON IT NOW, AND AFTER THE 600 MILE BREAK-IN AND SERVICE I’LL BE READY TO RIDE, BABY, RIDE !!!

CROSSROADS CHRISTMAS PARTY

WE HAD OUR RV PARK CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION WITH COCKTAILS AT 4PM AND DINNER AT 5 PM.

THERE WERE OVER A HUNDRED PEOPLE FOR THE HAM DINNER AND LOTS OF VISITING. WORD IS THAT THERE ARE ONLY 5 OPEN SITES LEFT FOR JANUARY. IT’S GOOD TO SEE THE PARK FILLED UP, UNLIKE THE LAST FEW YEARS.

INCLUDED ARE A FEW PHOTOS TAKEN BY LARRY HULL.

BRRRR........

WE HAD A FREEZE WARNING THE LAST COUPLE OF NIGHTS. NOT TYPICAL FOR THE LOWER DESERT. WE HAVE SOME SUMMER PLANTS FROM THE CABIN WE ARE TRYING TO SAVE OVER THE WINTER, AND SO I COVERED THEM.

THE PLANTS AREN'T THE ONLY THING OUT THERE LOOKING COLD.

JUST TO THE LEFT OF THE "X" ON THE PICTURE YOU CAN SEE THE GARDEN HOSE THAT RUNS UP OVER THE ROOF. THIS IS MY WATERING SYSTEM WHICH I TRY TO TURN ON EVERYDAY WHILE I WALK THE GARBAGE UP TO THE DUMPSTER. IT'S A GOOD PLAN UNLESS I FORGET TO TURN IT OFF WHICH RESULTS IN A MINOR FLOOD OF THE AREA.

LIKE THE REST OF BLOGLAND I'M MISSING THE LIVE WRITER SOFTWARE TO WRITE BLOGS, BUT I HAVE SOME CHRISTMAS PICTURES I'LL TRY TO GET UP THIS WEEK.

MAIDEN RIDE

WE’VE HAD THE SCOOTER FOR OVER A WEEK, AND TODAY MARY TOOK HER MAIDEN RIDE. WE STAYED AWAY FROM TOWN AND WENT UP THE MOUNTAIN TO OATMAN FOR A BEER. WE DID A WALK-ABOUT AND ENJOYED THE WARM WEATHER. I’M STILL NOT USED TO THE ADDED WEIGHT AND THE TWO OF US TOGETHER ARE GOING TO HAVE PRACTICE MOUNTING, TAKE OFFS, AND LANDINGS, BEFORE WE TAKE ON A SCOOTER TOUR.

OH NO REX !!! TELL ME YOU DIDN’T MAKE MARY GET ONE OF THOSE UGLY “DON’T RUN OVER MY ASS” YELLOW JACKETS?
YUP, NOW WE BOTH CAN WORK OUT ON THE HIWAY AS A FLAGMAN…..

I FORGOT……

BRRRRRR……..

WE WOKE UP THIS MORNING TO 26 DEGREES. NO WE WEREN’T ON THE LOWER DESERT, BUT WE WERE ON “THE MOUNTAIN”. WE DROVE UP YESTERDAY MORNING.

IN THE AFTERNOON IT WAS 15 DEGREES WARMER ON THE SCEEN PORCH THAN IT WAS INSIDE THE CABIN. WE WERE IN T-SHIRTS CARRYING 5 GAL BUCKETS OF WATER TO THE PLANTS IN MARY’S YARD. THE MOUNTAIN IS STILL ARIZONA AND BASICALLY AN ARID CLIMATE. MARY’S NEW PERENNIALS NEED TO BE WATERED ONCE A MONTH, UNLESS THERE IS GOOD SNOW COVER TO SURVIVE THE WINTER.

WE DIDN’T UNWINTERIZE THE CABIN FOR JUST ONE NIGHT, AND FIRED UP THE ELECTRIC HEAT IN THE BEDROOM AND BATHROOM. IT WARMED UP NICE AND COZY. WE HAD TO CARRY WATER ABOUT 50 YARDS FROM THE CLUBHOUSE LAUNDRY TO MARY’S PLANTS.

JOE AND ROSEMARY, FRIENDS WHO LIVE IN LAKE HAVASU IN THE WINTER, BUT ON THE MOUNTAIN IN THE SUMMER HAD DENTAL APPOINTMENTS IN SHOW LOW, SO WITH THE HUNTERS WE GOT TOGETHER FOR COCKTAILS AND DINNER.

THE HUNTER’S HAD A SOLAR POWERED CHRISTMAS WREATH HANGING ON THE FRONT OF THE CABIN.

AND IN THEIR OWN YARD A BEAUTIFUL CHRISTMAS ANGEL.

OH YA, I FORGOT…

ANOTHER REASON FOR OUR TRIP TO THE CABIN WAS, THAT I FORGOT MY KINDLE IN NOVEMBER ON THE BEDSIDE TABLE. I KEEP MY MEDICARE CARD AND OTHER INSURANCE CARDS IN MY KINDLE. GETTING OLD AND FORGETFUL LEADS TO ALL KINDS OF ADVENTURES.

BACK ON THE DESERT, AND “SUNNY & 77”……

SCOOTER UPGRADE

OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS I’VE RIDDEN THE SCOOTER OVER 6,000 MILES. I’VE REALLY ENJOYED IT, ESPECIALLY IN WISCONSIN ON OUR SUMMER TRIPS. I TEND TO RIDE THE SCOOTER MORE IN THE WINTER THAN IN THE SUMMER.

IN ANALIZING MY SCOOTER TIME, I FIGURED OUT WHY I ENJOY WISCONSIN MORE THAN THE SOUTHWEST. IN WISCONSIN THEY HAVE BLACKTOP FARM TO MARKET ROADS WHERE YOU CAN GET ANYWHERE IN THE STATE ON THE BACK ROADS. IN THE SOUTHWEST IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO TOUR WITHOUT USING THE INTERSTATE HIWAYS. THE HONDA JUST DOESN’T DO FREEWAY SPEEDS AND YOU’RE A SLOW MOVING “TARGET” IF YOU TRY IT.

THE REASON I RIDE MORE IN THE WINTER THAN SUMMER IS BECAUSE MARY TAKES THE SUMMERS “OFF” AND SCOOTERING HAS BEEN A SOLO ACTIVITY. OH SURE IT HAS FOOT PEGS AND A PASSENGER SEAT, THAT WERE DESIGNED FOR A 10 YEAR OLD JAPANESE KID.

WHAT I NEED IS A SCOOTER THAT DOES FREEWAY SPEEDS AND PROVIDES A COMFORTABLE SEAT FOR MY FAVORITE PASSENGER, MARY.

SO HERE IS THE SCOOTER UPGRADE, A SUSKI BURGMAN 650.

THIS IS THE DASHBOARD. AT THE TOP, A ROW OF IDIOT LIGHTS, INCLUDING ONE THAT LOOKS LIKE A SNOWFLAKE?  LEFT SPEEDOMETER, RIGHT TACH. THE MIDDLE LED PART FROM THE TOP, THE TIME OF DAY 2:52 PM, THE TEMPERATURE 69 DEGREES, AND 34 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THERE ARE TRIP SETS A & B AND YOU CAN TOGGLE THE TEMPERATURE TO TELL YOU YOUR GAS MILEAGE. TODAY, MY FIRST DAY I GOT 45.3 MILES PER GALLON. YUP, GONE ARE THE DAYS OF BRAGGING ABOUT 100 MILES TO THE GALLON.

BUTTONS? I GOT MORE BUTTONS THAN I KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH:

I EVEN GOT BUTTONS ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE HANDLEBARS.

ROOF COATING

SCRATCH ANOTHER ITEM OFF THE WINTER PROJECT LIST, ROOF COATING. THE CAMPER HAS A RUBBER MEMBRANE FOR A ROOF THAT’S GUARENTEED FOR 10 YEARS. AFTER 12 YEARS ON THE DESERT, I’M GUESSING IT NEEDS A COATING JOB.

DSC05186

SO I GOT OUT MY TOOL BOX, WHICH CONTAINS A PHONE BOOK AND A CHECKBOOK AND HIRED A PAINTER TO COME OVER AND COAT THE ROOF. EASY, DIDN’T TAKE MORE THAN 3 THREE HOURS TO WATCH HIM WORK.

DSC05187

ACTUALLY A PLASTIC VENT COVER CRUMBLED AND I HAD TO RACE ACROSS TOWN TO FIND A REPLACEMENT.

NICE TO HAVE ANOTHER PROJECT DONE!

SOLAR POWERED

IT WAS CINDY HOHLFELD WHO FIRST EXPLAINED TO ME THAT HER HUSBAND DAVE HAS BECOMED SOLAR POWERED.

IN MY FIRST YEAR OF RETIREMENT I’VE FOUND THAT I’VE BECOME SOLAR POWERED AS WELL. BACK IN THE DAY, I SLEPT UNTIL NOON, AND SAT AT THE ROM-NO-MORE TILL 2AM (OR MAYBE 3AM) EASY PEASY!

NOW…….. I’M IN BED WHEN THE SUN SETS. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW A PHOTO ON THE BLOG OF A BEAUTIFUL ARIZONA SUNSET? WHAT, DID YOU THINK MAJESTIC ARIZONA SUNSETS HAVE DISAPPEARED?

OR SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, THE SPRING BREAK CAPITAL OF TEXAS, NOTHING BUT SUNRISES….. DAY AFTER DAY, A BLOG FULL OF SUNRISES. IT’S AN ISLAND FOR GOD’S SAKE DON’T YOU THINK THE SUN SETS?

I HEAR YA, I NEED TO GET A LIFE…. , BUT WHEN YOU’RE SOLAR POWERED YOU JUST RUN OUT OF ENERGY WHEN THE SUN SETS AND I’M REQUIRED TO RETURN TO MY DOCKING STATION LIKE A ROOMBA VACCUME.

ON THE OTHER HAND, I’M WIDE AWAKE AT DAWN. SO, NOW I DON’T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL 5 O’CLOCK, I  POP THE FIRST MILLER LITE AT 11 AM.

AND I HAVE A LIFE !!! I LIVE IN ARIZONA WHERE THE SUN SHINES 360 DAYS A YEAR !!!

PAUL’S HOUSE

I HEADED INTO LAS VEGAS TODAY TO CHECKOUT PAUL’S NEW HOUSE. OLD NEWS REALLY, AS PAUL BOUGHT THE HOUSE AND MOVED IN LAST MAY, BUT SINCE I WAS ON THE MOUNTAIN FOR THE SUMMER IT WAS MY FIRST VISIT.

DSC05172

WE ENJOYED WATCHING THE PACKER’S BEAT THE VIKINGS AND HAD A LOT OF CATCHING UP TO DO VISITING.

DSC05174

I SKIPPED A SOAK IN THE HOT TUB, AND GOT HOME 10 MINUTES AFTER MARY GOT HOME FROM WORK.

GOOD TO SEE YA BUD, I ENJOYED THE VISIT !!!

9 TO 5

I’VE BEEN RETIRED SINCE JANUARY, AND OF COURSE THAT STICKS OUT THIS WEEK AS MARY RETURNS TO SLAPP’IN JACKS IN THE CASINO. TODAY I DID 9 TO 5. YUP, I LEFT HOME AT 9AM ON MY SCOOTER AND DIDN’T RETURN UNTIL 5 PM.

THE SCOOTER GETS USED A LOT MORE IN THE MOHAVE VALLEY THAN ON THE MOUNTAIN, AND YESTERDAY THE ODOMETER ROLLED OVER TO 6,000 MILES.

FIRST THING WAS A DENTIST APPOINTMENT ALL THE WAY ACROSS TOWN AT 10AM. NEXT WAS A HAIRCUT AT 11:30AM. HMMM…… IT’S AFTER 11 AM GUESS IT’S TIME TO STOP AT JESTER’S FOR A BEER ($2.00). NEXT IT WAS ACROSS THE RIVER AND A STOP AT THE MALL. I DID A “WALK ABOUT” IN LAUGHLIN TO SEE WHAT’S CHANGED AT THE LOCAL CASINOS, AND STOPPED AT THE REGENCY TO LOOSE $10 IN A SLOT MACHINE AND HAVE A BEER ($10).

AFTER LAUGHLIN IT WAS DOWN RIVER TO BAY SHORE WHERE THE BEER WAS $1.75, BUT I HAD FOUR SIXES DEALT TO ME IN VIDEO POKER SO I WON 400 NICKLES ($20).

LAST STOP WAS THE AVI CASINO TO LAUGH AT MARY STANDING BEHIND A BLACKJACK TABLE AND THEN HOME.

NOT A BAD DAY, 9 TO 5. 70 MILES ON THE SCOOTER AND MORE GOOD NEWS, GAS FELL TO $1.96/GAL. IT COST ME $2 TO FILL ‘ER UP.

DSC05170

MARY’S OFF TODAY, SO IT’S BACK TO WORK, STARTING WITH SEVERAL LOADS OF LAUNDRY.

WELCOME BACK !!!

CROSSROADS RV PARK HAD THEIR “WELCOME BACK” PIZZA PARTY. NOW THAT THE SOCIAL SEASON HAS OFFICALLY OPENED WATCHOUT FOR HORSESHOES, BOWLING, POKER, EUCHER, CAMPFIRES, POTLUCKS, ARTS AND CRAFTS, BIBLE STUDY, AND STARTING THIS YEAR, MARY’S EXERCISE CLASS PROMPTLY AT 8AM, M-W-F.

THE PARK IS HALF FULL AT THIS TIME, BUT MANY SNOWBIRDS WAIT UNTIL AFTER THANKSGIVING OR CHRISTMAS TO SEEK WARMER WEATHER.

UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO EL NINO WE ARE EXPECTING A COLDER AND WETTER WINTER THAN USUAL. LAST NIGHT THEY HAD SNOW DOWN TO 3,000 FEET. NO WORRRIES HERE AT 650 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL.

THE PICTURES WERE TAKEN BY LARRY HULL.

MOHAVE VALLEY

WE’RE STILL HERE IN THE MOHAVE VALLEY, KINDA KICKED BACK AND JUST ENJOYING THE LAST WEEK OF MARY’S VACATION. MARY IS RETURNING TO THE CASINO NEXT WEEK AS A BLACKJACK DEALER AFTER 200 DAYS OFF.

WE HAVE THE FALL “TO DO” LIST AND A WINTER PROJECT LIST TO WORK ON, BUT SUNSHINE AND SCOOTER RIDES HAVE BEEN THE CASE THIS WEEK.

ONE WINTER PROJECT WE DID DO WAS THE REMOVAL OF THE DINNING BOOTH IN THE SLIDEOUT. IT’S ONE OF THOSE PROJECTS WE SHOULD HAVE DONE 10 YEARS AGO, BUT WE NEVER FOUND THE RIGHT CHAIRS, AND WE DIDN’T WANT TO GIVE UP THE STORAGE UNDER THE BENCH SEATS.

DSC05168

DSC05169

WHEN WE BOUGHT THE CABIN LAST SUMMER WE INHERITED A COUPLE OF THESES CHAIRS AND THEY WILL WORK GREAT AT THE EXISTING TABLE, WHICH WE MOVED ABOUT A FOOT. ALL IN ALL, IT WAS A LOW BUDGET PROJECT.

BLOGGING

I’VE NOTICED FEWER AND FEWER BLOGGERS OVER THE YEARS. IT SEEMS EVERYONE HAS TURNED TO FACEBOOK TO STAY CAUGHT UP WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY. ANOTHER FACTOR, LIKE  DIGITAL CAMERAS, COMPUTERS AND LAPTOPS HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY IPHONES, AND TABLETS. SURE YOU CAN READ MY BLOG ON YOUR SMART PHONE, BUT IT TAKES AN EXTRA EFFORT AND I HAVE FEWER READERS THAN EVER.

I HAVE BEEN EXPERIMENTING WITH A FEW BLOGS BEING POSTED ON FACEBOOK. I DON’T REALLY CARE FOR IT, SEEMS MY BLOG APPEARS FOR A HALF DAY AND DISAPPEARS INTO FACEBOOK HEAVEN. I’LL STAY WITH BLOGGER, AND BLOG OCCASIONALLY WHEN THERE IS SOMETHING OF INTEREST GOING ON AROUND HERE.

WINTER CAMP

WE SUCCESSFULLY LANDED AT WINTER CAMP EARLIER IN THE WEEK. BECAUSE WE’VE SPENT THE LAST 16 WINTERS IN MOHAVE VALLEY IT ALWAYS FEELS LIKE WE’RE COMING HOME.

IT WAS A SHOCK LEAVING THE SUMMER WEATHER AND THE SOUTH PADRE ISLAND BEACH TO ARRIVE BACK ON “THE MOUNTAIN” AND WHAT AMOUNTS TO WINTER FOR MARY AND I. WE HAD MR. HEATER AND THE ELECTRIC HEAT GOING FOR THE LONG WEEK-END WE SPENT CLOSING DOWN.

THE CABIN IS SET UP LIKE AN RV WITH WINTERIZING THE PLUMBING. THERE ARE TWO LOW POINT DRAINS, DRAIN THE HOT WATER HEATER, A WATER HEATER BY-PASS, AN RV WATER PUMP WHICH WE HOOKED TO THE OUTDOOR FAUCET AND PUMP THE LINES FULL OF RV ANTIFREEZE, OPEN EACH FAUCET AND RUN THE PINK STUFF DOWN THE DRAIN. DON’T FORGET THE CLOTHES WASHER OR THE KITCHEN SINK SPRAYER. I’LL HAVE TO REPORT BACK IN THE SPRING IF THE PLUMBER HAS TO COME AND FIX WHATEVER I SCREWED UP!

OUR BIGGEST CONCERN RETURNING TO WINTER CAMP WAS THE SCREEN MATERIAL COVERING THE PORCH. THE CLOTH LIKE SOLAR MATERIAL HAS A LIFE OF 5 YEARS, AND OURS HAS BEEN UP 6 YEARS. WE WERE EXSPECTING IT TO BE FLYING IN THE WIND. GOOD NEWS EVERYTHNG IS IN TACT!!!

NOW WE HAVE THE FALL “TO DO” LIST AND THIS AFTERNOON MARY IS OFF TO THE DENTIST, MY DENTIST APPOINTMENT IS IN TWO WEEKS.

I’D LIKE TO REPORT THAT THE WEATHER IS “SUNNY & 80”, BUT IT’S ONLY SUNNY & 70 THIS AFTERNOON.

WEATHER REPORT

THE WEATHER HERE IN TEXAS HAS BEEN WILD. AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS OF RAIN AND COASTAL FLOODING, SATURDAY NIGHT WE WERE HIT WITH WHAT WAS LEFT OF HURRICANE PATRICA AND MORE RAIN.

THE BESL BUNCH LEFT AT 1PM FRIDAY TO TRY AND DRIVE BETWEEN THE RAINS AND THE HURRICANE EVENT TO RETURN TO LA CROSSE, WI. BETWEEN THE FLOODING AND ROAD CLOSERS THE TRIP HOME TOOK THEM THREE AND A HALF HOURS LONGER THAN THE TRIP DOWN.

SATURDAY NIGHT THE STREETS ON THE ISLAND WERE FLOODED AND PRETTY MUCH CLOSED DOWN THE ISLAND. WE DIDN’T EVEN VENTURE OUTSIDE TO MAKE THE WALK TO WANNA WANNA.

THE SEA HAS BEEN HIGH FOR SEVERAL DAYS WHICH MAKES THE BEAUTIFUL BEACH ON SOUTH PADRE ISLAND DISAPPEAR. BEFORE THE HIGH SEAS WE WERE DAY TO DAY ON THE RED TIDE. THIS MORNING IT’S COLD OUTSIDE, AND NEITHER OF US PACKED ANY LONG PANTS.

WE’RE IN A HOLDING PATTERN WAITING FOR TEXAS TO DRY OUT AND THE FLOOD WATERS TO RECEDE, AND THEN WILL RETURN TO “THE MOUNTAIN” TO CLOSE DOWN THE CABIN FOR THE WINTER. WE HAVE PLENTY OF TIME AS THE NEXT THING ON THE SCHEDULE IS A DENTIST APPOINTMENT FOR MARY ON NOVEMBER 4TH IN BULLHEAD CITY, AZ.
