Belizian Artwork

We have found some incredible artwork on the island.  Here’s some of our favorites.
art 002
If you look at this one long enough, it takes on a 3D affect.  And I absolutely love the orange.

art 003
A couple of island beach scenes, too bad the lighting isn’t great.

art 004
I love the peaceful, happy scene in this painting by a local artist Cooper.

art 007-1
Not sure but I think this is painted on a dried leaf of some sort.  Didn’t think to ask anyone.

art 009
The beautiful marine life inspires everyone-this painting was done by our landlady, Sally and I think it’s great!

art 010
 Another island beach scene.

Beautiful pottery is also on hand……

art 015
as are shells.

The best thing about this artwork----it’s all here in Canuck Cottage and I have been enjoying it daily for over a week!

View from Caye Caulker

One of the really great things about traveling is seeing new things, experiencing different cultures, and having a blog to share them.

island 001
This is an example of the lizards that crawl around all over here.  This one is probably about a foot long, we see them as small as a couple of inches.

island 010
A beautiful egret strolling by the dock.

island 003
This white flower fits into the season….looks a little scary for Halloween with those tendrils.

island 009
A similar model comes in pink.

island 004
My photographer (Rex) said he just liked this big palm tree and…

island 005
it’s nuts.

island 017
You see a lot of dogs around here.  This one happens to have a collar but most don’t and just run loose.  One fact I found very interesting:  no matter how many dogs I have seen (and there have been a lot)… I haven’t seen any dog shit…what happens to it or do I really want to know??

island 012
A lady cleaning the “catch of the day”.  As fast as she was throwing the fish guts into the water a big black bird was swooping down to retrieve it.  Fast recycling!!!

island 016
My photographer (Rex) taking ANOTHER shot he liked!!

island 002
This is the Iguana Bed and Breakfast and I just thought it was a pretty house.

I also saw a couple of things I wasn’t lucky enough to get pictures of.  On the dock one day I noticed a kid run over to one of the trees with long fronds, he pulled one and I wondered what he was going to do with it.  He took it back to the dock and used it as a a stringer to put his fish on.  Cool!

The other day while we were in San Predro, I saw a little girl about 4 or 5 years old putting the chain back on her bike.

I really appreciate self sufficient people!!

SAN PEDRO

HERE IS SOMETHING EVEN I'VE NEVER SEEN AS A "HAPPY CAMPER" IT'S OUR LAUNDRY HANGING OUTSIDE ON A LINE.

DID YOU NOTICE HANNAH, THE DOG, SUPERVISING THE CLOTHES HANGING?

WE'VE BEEN HERE A WEEK ALREADY AND I'VE SETTLED INTO A ROUTINE.  FIRST THING IN THE MORNING IT'S COFFEE, MY INTERNET PAPERS AND BLOGS.  THEN I HOP ON MY BIKE AND GET MY MORNING CINNAMON ROLL AT THE LOCAL BAKERY FOR BREAKFAST.

THIS ISLAND REMINDS OF GONE BY YEARS.  NO SMOKING LAWS, NO CARS, TRAVEL BY BIKE ALL OVER TOWN.  NO BIKE HELMETS, PEOPLE WALKING AND TALKING, THE STREETS ARE SAND......

I LOVE CAYE CAULKER.

THEY ARE HAVING A WATER TAXI WAR.  IT'S A POLITICAL THING, AND ONE COMPANY IN AN EFFORT TO KNOCK OFF THE OTHER COMPANY, HAS LOWERED PRICES.  WE BOUGHT ROUND TRIP TICKETS TO SAN PEDRO FOR $10 (BZD) EACH.  FIVE YEARS AGO WHEN WE VISITED BELIZE WE SPENT OUR TIME ON AMBERGRIS CAYE AND SAN PEDRO, THIS IS THE SAN PEDRO THAT MADONNA SANG ABOUT.

HERE IS THE PICTURE TO PROVE WE WERE THERE.

ACTUALLY WE HATED SAN PEDRO.  IT'S GOTTEN TOO BIG, PAVED STREETS, GOLF CARTS, TOYOTA VANS, AND EVEN DUMP TRUCKS ZIPPING ALL OVER.  JUST TAKE ME BACK TO "GO SLOW" AND CAYE CAULKER. SO BACK WE WENT......

HERE WE ARE ENJOYING A SHRIMP SNACK.....

SAFELY BACK ON CAYE CAULKER.

SWINGING AND GROOVING ......

OH YA, THE SHRIMP.........

HAVE YOU EVER EATEN CONCH?

YOU SIMPLY BEAT IT TO DEATH AND FLAT AND FRY IT UP LIKE FISH.  IT REMINDS ME OF SCALLOPS......
MMMM  GOOD.

A Report From Home

By Susie-Q

Home Alone

I’ve been reading the Blog this week, even if I am stuck here on the desert , Home Alone, and it sucks not to be there, on Caye Caulker with the Happy Campers.

Actually I’m not alone.  The good neighbors, Steve and Meryl stop by at least once a day and visit.  Here is Steve entertaining me as usual.

ok 002

Luckily, Rex left my cat treats handy:

ok 003

Besides Steve, I have my favorite Roadie stop by in the mornings to torment the Shit out of me.  If it weren’t for this screen door, it would be Me, Wiley Coyote, and the Acme company all over this Roadie’s butt.

RR 001

Can you see that S.O.B. sitting outside, just to the right of my head?

RR 004

Damn that Road Runner gets under my skin !!!

Don’t worry Happy Campers, I’m doing my job of guarding the home front, and keeping up on my daily patrols of the camper.

By the way, you’ve been gone a looong time are you ever coming home?  At least to get me?

SUNDAY FOOTBALL

EVEN THE SUNDAY FOOTBALL IS BETTER ON CAYE CAULKER.  THE PACKERS WON !! A HEART BREAKER FOR THE VIKING FANS, AND ONCE AGAIN WITH BOTH TEAMS ON TV AT THE SAME TIME I FOUND MYSELF WATCHING BRETT FAVRE A LOT MORE THAN THE PACKERS.  I GUESS NEXT WEEK WE WON'T HAVE THE PROBLEM OF WATCHING TWO TV'S AS BRETT RETURNS TO THE HOLY LAND, LAMBEAU FIELD.

WE WATCHED THE GAME AT THE BARRIER REEF SPORTS BAR, "WHERE EVERYONE KNOWS YOUR NAME".  SITTING ACROSS THE BAR FROM US WAS LLOYD, THE BAR OWNER, AND SALLY, OUR LANDLADY.

I WANTED TO COMMENT ON YESTERDAY'S BLOG, BY MARY.  WHEN WE WENT WITH RASS CREEK OUT TO SWIM WITH THE STING RAYS, WE WERE STRAIGHT OUT A MILE FROM CAYE CAULKER RIGHT ON THE EDGE OF THE BARRIER REEF.

THE EXPERIENCE OF SWIMMING WITH A DOZEN STING RAYS WAS TRULY REMARKABLE.  RASS ANCHORED THE BOAT IN FOUR AND A HALF FEET OF WATER AND I WAS IN THE WATER WITH MY SNORKEL AND MASK SHORTLY AFTER.

MARY TOOK THE REMARKABLE PICTURES FROM THE BOAT.  AFTER THE CAMERA WAS TUCKED SAFELY AWAY, IT TOOK RASS AND I BOTH TO GET MARY OFF THE BOAT AND INTO THE WATER.  MARY JUST ISN'T COMFORTABLE IN THE WATER, MUCH LESS THE OCEAN.

ALTHOUGH WE DON'T HAVE THE PICTURES TO PROVE IT, MARY ALSO TOUCHED AND SWAM WITH THE STINGRAYS.  UNDERWATER PICTURES WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER, BUT.....

Stingrays!!

I got blog duty today for some reason…so here is how my vacation on Caye Caulker started.
Rex filled you on in our arrival in Belize and the water taxi ride to Caye Caulker.  What he didn’t mention is that as I was disembarking from the water taxi, I twisted my  foot.  Twisting my ankle would make more sense, but my ankle is fine, it’s  my foot that is screwed up.

Tuesday night my foot was so swollen and sore that I honestly felt I would be in a doctors office Wed. morning.  I could put NO weight on it.  So on our first night I laid on the couch with my foot elevated.  Now that really sucked!!

The long and short of this, is that my foot has got better each day.  I’ve  gone from using a cane to going without and being able to do most everything I want to.

Anyway today’s adventure included stingrays up close and personal.

Rex had been reading about a boat owner named Rass Creek, that we could hire for a cruise around the island.

rass 046

I don’t know about you but I am  thinking about Gilligan and a “three hour cruise”.

rass 019

Rex enjoys a shot from “The Captain”.  He is really liking that “island atmosphere “.

rass 010

Rex is getting ready to see “the rays'”!

rass 009

A good thing because our captain has a personal favorite that he wants to introduce to him.

rass 012

The introduction……

rass 013

The handoff…..ready or not!!
That was definitely the highlight of the cruise, but not everything Rass had on the agenda.

rass 029,

Rass is throwing sardines into the water which is,

rass 024

causing this feeding frenzy by a lot of fish called tarpon.

rass 036

The last “treasure from  the sea“, of the day was this male seahorse.  Endangered but still  hanging on in Belize.

That pretty much covered our day, and then we got to go home and make fresh red snapper for supper.
This island ROCKS!!
