SPRING OPENER

UNCLE HANS AND NEIL, YEARS AGO HAD A TRADITION OF GETTING TOGETHER IN THE SPRING FOR THEIR FIRST MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURE OF THE SEASON AND CALLED IT THE “SPRING OPENER”.

MY GOAL WAS TO RESURECT THE “SPRING OPENER” TRADITION AND RIDE ALONG ON MY SCOOTER. I TRAILERED MY SCOOTER BACK TO WISCONSIN ($1,000.00 IN GAS, ROUND TRIP) IN THE THIRD WEEK OF MAY THINKING THE WEATHER WOULD BE PRIME. I WAS HOPING TO RIDE BETWEEN 800 AND A 1,000 MILES IN BEAUTIFUL WISCONSIN.

DSC02291

I WAS WRONG AND VERY DISAPPOINTED. THE WISCONSIN WEATHER SUCKED WITH COLD WEATHER AND RAIN. I GOT CAUGHT IN THE RAIN TWICE AND RODE ONLY 250 MILES IN TOTAL.

HANS AND I DROVE THE BACK-UP BUICK (ANOTHER DEER STORY FOR LATER) HALF WAY TO GREEN BAY AND MET NEIL FOR A FEW COLD ONES AND A NICE VISIT.

MARY AND I RETURNED TO THE MOUNTAIN YESTERDAY TO “SUNNY & 70” SUMMER WEATHER, WHERE WE’VE SETTLED INTO A LONG PROJECT LIST FOR SUMMER.

IT’S LIKE SNOWMOBILING

MY PLAN TO RIDE MY SCOOTER IN WISCONSIN FOR A WEEK HAS BEEN MORE LIKE SNOWMOBILING. WE ZIP FROM TAVERN TO TAVERN NOT SO MUCH FOR THE BEER, BUT TO STOP AND GET WARM! YESTERDAY AFTERNOON THE TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE WAS 46 DEGREES. THANK GOD HANS PROVIDED ME WITH SNOWMOBILE CLOTHES AND GLOVES.

WHAT I THOUGHT WAS GOING TO BE 800 – 1000 MILES THIS WEEK IS SO FAR 150 MILES, AND THE FORCAST IS FOR RAIN ALL DAY TOMORROW, WHEN WE WERE SUPPOSED TO MEET UP WITH BROTHER NEIL.

I STILL HAVE 4 DAYS LEFT, AND IT IS WISCONSIN, SO THE WEATHER MAY CHANGE.

THE WISCONSIN TRIP

ON OUR OUR TRIP TO WISCONSIN WE MET MARK & JAYNE IN INDEPENDENCE, IOWA FOR LUNCH. THEY WERE RETURNING TO DES MOINES FROM A LONG WEEK-END AT YELLOW RIVER FOREST.

ON OUR FIRST EVENING WE STAYED WITH MIKEY AND ENJOYED OURSELVES IN HIS MAN CAVE. BILL STOPPED OVER WITH A GALLON OF BLUE GILL FILLETS AND FRIED FISH UNTIL WE WERE MORE THAN FULL.

THE NEXT DAY WE SAW TODD & DI FOR A MINUTE, AND STOPPED IN BOSCOBEL TO LOOK IN ON MARY’S 96 YEAR OLD MOTHER. WE ENDED THE DAY IN LA CROSSE WITH MARY’S FAMILY, MUSHROOMS, AND A BUTTERSCOTCH MALT !!!

YESTERDAY WE TRAVELLED TO SPOONER WHERE I’LL STAY FOR A WEEK WITH UNCLE HANS, AND MARY FIRED UP THE OD’S CADILLAC TO RETURN TO HER FAMILY IN LA CROSSE. WE TRAVELLED THROUGH CHETECK, WI ABOUT 1 PM JUST 3 OR 4 HOURS BEFORE THE DEADLY TORNADO WENT THROUGH THERE.

THANKS TO MARK FOR THE YELLOW RIVER TROUT WHICH WE FRIED UP IN SPOONER TO GO WITH WITH OUR STEAK AND THE LAST OF THE MUSHROOMS.

THE RAIN IN SPOONER HAS ME QUESTIONING THE WISDOM OF DRAGGING THE SCOOTER ALL THE WAY FROM ARIZONA TO WISCONSIN…….

DSC02293

AT LEAST I LEARNED THAT MY NEW RAIN PANTS WORK JUST FINE.

CINCO DE MAYO

CINCO DE MAYO ON A FRIDAY !!! EVEN MARY AND I PLAN TO HEAD OUT TO A MEXICAN PLACE FOR A MARGARITS AT 5PM. OF COURSE OUR FAVORITE BAND, FAT CHANCE, IS GOING TO BE PLAYING OUTSIDE ON THE PATIO.

WE’VE BEEN BUSY HERE ON “THE MOUNTAIN” WITH MARY SPENDING A LOT OF TIME IN HER YARD. SHE HAS REMOVED HER LILAC BUSHES AND HER PYRACANTHA BUSHES OFF THE BACK DECK. SHE HAS ALSO DUG AND LINED WITH BRICKS A NEW ZINNIA GARDEN. THE RULE IS NOT TO PLANT UNTIL AFTER MOTHER’S DAY, AND THIS YEAR IS NO EXCEPTION AS WE HAVE OVERNIGHT FREEZING TEMPERATURES IN THE FORCAST FOR EARLY NEXT WEEK, SO WE WILL BE CARRYING ALL THE PLANTS INSIDE AGAIN THIS WEEK.

YESTERDAY AFTERNOON WAS “SUNNY & 80” AND IN OUR QUEST FOR 10,000 STEPS A DAY, WE ROLLED OUT THE SCOOTER AND TOOK A RIDE OVER TO THE RIM TRAIL FOR A HIKE.  DURING THE HIKE MARY SUDDENLY STOPS !! I THINK WE WILL GIVE RIGHT OF WAY TO THE RATTLESNAKE THAT WAS SLITHERING ARCOSS THE TRAIL.

TOMORROW THE HUNTERS WILL JOIN US FOR OUR ANNUAL KENTUCKY DERBY VIEWING.
