HAWLEY LAKE
I HAD THE SCOOTER OUT FOR AN 85 MILE RUN IN THE WHITE MOUNTAINS. I CHECKED ON HAWLEY LAKE WHICH I HADN’T VISITED FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. THE LAST TIME I WAS HERE THE LAKE HAD BEEN COMPLETLY DRAINED FOR REPAIRS. IT WAS NICE TO SEE IT REFILLED. THE NINE MILE ROAD INTO HAWLEY LAKE IS A BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAIN ROAD COMPLETE WITH TWISTIES. FUN !!!
I ALSO ROAD BY HORSESHOE LAKE AND MADE A STOP AT A-1 LAKE. HUNTER, I FOUND THE STORY ON THE NAMING OF A-1 LAKE.
This waterway was named in honor of the great Apache scout, Chief Alchesay, whose native name proved so difficult for U.S. Army officials to pronounce that they simply referred to him as A-1. The label stuck and became his official U.S. Cavalry serial number. I can't think of a more fitting moniker for this waterway-often the first White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation reservoir seen by anglers. It's most befitting of a scout.
