La Posada
In addition to “the corner” Winslow, AZ is where La Posada is located. La Posada is a hotel from the era of the “Harvey Girls”.
Fred Harvey is said to have “civilized the West” by introducing linen, silverware, china, crystal, and impeccable service to railroad travelers. La Posada which opened May 15, 1930 was a restaurant and hotel for the Santa Fe Railroad. It was designed by famed Western architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, best known for her work at the Grand Canyon. This was in a period of history that women architects were quite uncommon.
Just for the fun of it I am going to list a few of the famous people that have stayed at La Posada:
Charles Lindberg, Anne Morrow Lindberg, Amelia Earhart, Carole Lombard, Clark Gable, Bob Hope, Gene Autry, Howard Hughes, John Wayne, Will Rogers, Wiley Post, Albert Einstein, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and President Harry S. Truman. That is but a partial list and there are some more recent famous people too, but I found these people the most interesting.
The following pictures show some of the interior and grounds of La Posada.
The next few pictures are of one of the rooms. It is my understanding that all of the room are decorated differently.
The shower and tub in this room is also made out of this beautiful tile.
The current owners of La Posada is Allan Affeldt and his wife Tina Mion. They moved in on April 1, 1997 and began the renovating right away. Tina Mion is an incredible artist and a lot of her artwork is on display at La Posada. You can Google her and see some incredible artwork!!
Our daytrip to Winslow was definitely worth it!!
